There's a pause before he finally takes a breath to speak, his lips still so close that Vash can feel his breath against his hair. "You asked me," he whispers, "if I could promise I would never make you a test subject. And I said I could not make that kind of promise in this place, where one's mind so often isn't one's own. I still don't know if I can make such a promise," especially since he's completely forgotten the control device, "but I will do everything I can to make certain that doesn't happen to you." He smiles faintly and that can be heard in his voice. "One advantage to having the mad scientist on your side, I suppose. I've got the inside knowledge that can thwart all the other mad scientists."
